New "North and South" mini-series

Just a short note, no details yet.

  1. That's interesting.

I wonder if it will get made before the 'To Appomattox' AKA 'Lee vs Grant' mini series that has been in development hell forever.

I thought Patrick Swayze was pretty definitive in the first 'North and South' before becoming immortal in 'Road House' ("Pain don't Hurt").

I have always kind of liked the battle scenes in 'North and South'. I thought they captured the stunned disbelief of the Northern army and civilians starting to panic when First Bull Run is being lost. Heck, they even had the 1st Minnesota in their Red shirt, black pants get up that they wore at the battle. They kind of counteracted it with showing Berdan's Sharpshooters at the battle.

Also, Antietam had a pretty memorable battle scene especially when the cannon blew up and wiped out all of the Confederates trying to use it.

Anthony Zerbe was also a pretty good Grant in it and it had a bigger budget than 'The Blue and the Gray' which helped.

I just grew weary of all of the soapy aspects though. It'll be interesting to see what they do with the remake.

    1. I haven't read any of the books myself, but, according to Jakes, there are many changes that can be made that would make the series a closer adaptation (e.g. the annoying evil nemesis guy Bent was a northerner, not a southerner) so maybe they will try to do that.

  2. Yes, I agree.

The original '80s series really jumbled up quite a bit of things from the books. I think it would make a improvement to hew closer to the books.
