First Cunningham, now Reed

Shiloh-philes will continue to be rewarded. Earlier this year, Savas-Beatie published a wonderful edited edition of O. Edward Cunningham's Shiloh and the Western Campaign of 1862. Next year, another much wished for Shiloh classic, D.W. Reed's The Battle of Shiloh and the Organizations Engaged, will be reprinted by University of Tennessee Press (May 2008). My familiarity with Reed's work is only by reputation, but would venture to guess that this will certainly be another highly anticipated Civil War title for next year. All or part of Reed's study is available already from Google books (link), but I am sure true Civil War bibliophiles will want the new print edition.

  1. Thanks for the heads-up on this. U of Tenn Press is really making a contribution with their commitment to CW literature.

I didn't realize this was available online, but like you said, most of us would rather read it in a more traditional (and comfortable) format. Nice to have a searchable text on the computer, though.

  2. U.Tenn. is really rolling. There has been something of a lull in CW book output from LSU and UNC lately (at least the kind that most interest me), and the Vols are picking up the slack nicely.

Hey, did you notice on the google books scans of Reed, that several pages were covered with some mess that looks like a Rohrschach Test? It completely defaces one of the valuable numbers and losses tables.

  4. Maybe I'm not looking at the same scans. On my screen, 106 and 112 look fine, but 123 and 124 are blank pagrs.
